Before John the Baptizer was born, his father Zechariah was visited by an angel from God. The angel told him, “Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord … He will bring many of the people to their God. He will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” (Luke 1:13-17)
John came before Jesus to prepare the way for us to know God, to prepare us and all people to repent their disconnection from God. He sought to make us ready for Jesus’ coming and working in our lives, to help us begin to make changes and repairs, to learn to love God and other people/neighbors. Lord, how can I help prepare people to receive you?
